Single-lamp monitoring system based on wireless sensor networks( WSNs) can inspect the airfield lighting automatically. Timely transmitting the message of the lights to monitoring center is of great significance to improve the reliability of airfield lighting and ensure safety of airplanes’ approaching and landing.Limited energy is one of the main factors that constraint the development of the WSNs,so how to reduce the power consumption of the nodes and prolong the lifetime of the networks as far as possible are the research focuses of the WSNs. By analyzing the characteristics of the energy consumption of WSNs, energy-saving measures are proposed from three aspects including hardware designing, software programming and wireless communication protocol. Based on low-consumption and simple construction, wireless sensor networks-based single-lamp monitoring system is designed. In order to further balance the energy of the network, improvement of routing protocol for the airfield approach area is made and the simulation results show that the new routing protocol can prolong the lifetime of networks effectively. Communication distance is one of the important reliability parameters of the wireless sensor network and it is determined by transmitting power. Series outdoor experiments were implemented to select an optimal transmitting power. In this paper, resistance sampling method is used to measure the node’s energy consumption and the results provides practical basis for evaluating the lifetime of the monitoring system.
