This paper researched the technologies of segmentation and 3D-visualization of DICOM medical images by making use of the ITK toolkit and the VTK toolkit.As the modern medical technology developed,the segmentation technology and the 3D-visualization technology have become the bottleneck in the medical image processing.Medical image segmentation can cut out the regions of interest in medical images or parts for a study,doctors can easy know which part of the body is ill and how to take measure.Medical image 3D-visualization can make the medicine slice look like three-dimensional and iconic.Therefore,the medical image segmentation and 3D-visualization has great value in clinical and academic.The technology of the medical image segmentation is the basis of the medical image disposing and analysis system and operation navigation system.It has great significance in the current medical image processing and analysis.In this paper,we studied the classic format and the content of the DICOM medical files,then displayed and parsed it by using the ITK and VTK development kit;we studied the segmentation algorithms based in the ITK.In the Windows environment,we come true the C T brain Image segmentation by using Threshold segmentation algorithm,region segmentation algorithm,a watershed segmentation algorithm,the level-set segmentation algorithm based on the ITK,at the same times,we come true the segmentation of the volume data;moreover,we researched the 3D-visualization algorithms based on the VTK,the theory of the Surface rendering and the volume rendering are the key point,and finished 3D-visualization of the VHP 's CT brain Image slice by applying the VTK in the Marching Cubes way and the Ray Casting way.The experiment shows that the Marching Cubes algorithm renders fast but the result is general,and the Ray Casting algorithm draws slower but the effect is better.In our paper,we have accomplished the DICOM pictures segmentation and reconstruction by taking use of the ITK and VTK,and we compared the merits and faults of the two different methods.Finally,we compared the 3D-visualization outcomes when we added the filtering algorithm and the speed of the algorithm.At the same time we proposed a method to realize 3D-visualization based on ITK grid.Experiments show that this method which is based on the ITK ::mesh is fast,small amount of calculation and the drawing outcome is more ideal.
