Underwater Wireless Sensor Network(UWSN) plays a very important role in marine resources exploration, marine environmental monitoring, natural disaster prevention of earthquake and tsunami, marine navigation and national Security. It has many unique characteristics, such as limited bandwidth and energy, serious transmission loss, long propagation delay and high bit error rate. These characteristics make existing technologies and protocols in terrestrial wireless sensor networks cannot be applied to UWSN directly. Thus it need further research to explore proper protocols. This paper studies Geographic Information routing protocol and energy-saving algorithm in underwater sensor networks. The typical routing protocols for UWSN are presented, and routing protocols based on location information are also elaborated. What is more, the paper introduces the popular energy-saving algorithms and divides them into four categories. This paper proposes an energy routing protocol based on location information in Underwater Sensor Network, which saves energy and balances the energy consumption of the entire network efficiently. To solve the problem of limited energy, unbalanced energy consumption, and to achieve long survival time of network, this paper puts forward a new geographic routing protocol based on Vector Based Forwarding Protocol(VBF) for three-dimensional underwater sensor network——Energy Vector Based Forwarding Protocol(E-VBF). The main purpose of the new routing protocol is saving energy. E-VBF puts both residual energy and location information into consideration while calculating desirableness factor. By simulation, it shows that the E-VBF algorithm increases the remaining energy, balances the energy consumption and prolongs the lifetime of network without worsening the packet reception ratio(PRR) apparently. Moreover, the paper gives theoretical analysis and simulation test for the three parameters in the protocol, and states the effects of parameter selection on the protocol performances.
