Recently, with the rapid development of high-tech electronics, various military and civilian electronic devices have been invented. The applications of these devices make the electromagnetic environment of battle-space become extremely harsh, and bring airborne radio communications great challenges. In the complex electromagnetic environment, how to build accurate and reliable communications through airborne radio, and prevent information being intercepted, which has became the world's military field research focus. The studying on frequency hopping radio is so prominent that it has gradually spread in various military countries and has been studied deeply in recent years.In this paper, the complex electromagnetic environment, and its composition and main characteristics respectively in time, frequency, space and energy domains were systematically studied and analyzed. Secondly, the main interference models and conditions of the complex electromagnetic environment were summarized as well as being simulated. Thirdly, this paper analyzes the frequency hopping communication system, which includes the theoretical foundation, the system composition, the principle of system and key technologies etc. In addition, the authors analyze and model the various components of the constructed system using the software MATLAB/Simulink. Besides, this paper also explains the spectrum changes of signal at each position of the communication system in detail by simulation. Finally, communication interference model of complex electromagnetic environments is joined in channel simulation analysis of system composition. Based on the error rate curves, the effect of the interference model on hopping communication system could be comprehended. This paper also explores how to improve the anti-jamming capability of hopping system so as to improve the adaptability of airborne radio in the complex electromagnetic environment.
