With the development of wireless communication, nowadays wireless communitcation field is stepping into the leading period of short distance communication. As the issuing of 3G's license and the formation of LTE system, WLAN and WPAN's requirements is growing fast. High speed, low power dissipation, short distance and broad wideband are the unique advantages of UWB technology, especially; UWB technoloty can reuse the occupied frequency resources, and relieve the saturated frequency resources for now. All this outstanding features of UWB technology make it's possible to use the technology into WLAN, WPAN, PC, peripheral equipment and intelligent terminal's market. The main aim for this paper is to optimize the performance of UWB wireless communication system. Based on the binary time-hopping pulse position modulation (TH-PPM), a novel modulation scheme was proposed in this paper, which is binary time-hopping pulse position width modulation. This new modulation communicates different user's signal through different pulse with different width, and we used different kinds of method to prove it has better performance than traditional modulations. The main work of this paper is below:(1)Analyzed the traditional modulations of UWB, includes:on-off keying (OOK), pulse amplitude modulation (PAM), binary phase modulation and transmit reference modulation. Paid a lot attention on pulse position modulation (PPM) and the time-hopping technology for multi-user UWB communication system. On the basic of research of pulse position modulation, and in order to improve the performance of this modulation, we proposed a new modulation called time-hopping pulse position width modulation.(2)Built the multi user's signal model based on TH-PPWM, and simulated the relation between the symbol error rate and the amount of the user.(3)Derivated the formula of TH-PPWM's symbol error rate in AWGN channel. Through the simulation under this environment, we compared the performance of TH-PPWM and TH-PPM, concluded that as amount of user and pulse form factor alter, TH-PPWM's performance is better than TH-PPM's to different extent.(4)Researched frequency dependence channel's affection on pulse waveform in multi-access environment, and with the affection on receiver. Based on all these we deduced and built the signal model of TH-PPWM under the frequency dependence channel. Aimed at Rake receivers with different multi-access choosing and combination methods, we did simulation to find what kind of Rake receiver can get the best performance with TH-PPWM under the frequency dependence channel. Then proved that TH-PPWM's performance is better than TH-PPM's under the frequency dependence channel.
