Large-screen multi-projection seamless tiled display systems are widely used in the fields of major exhibitions, transportation dispatch, public security management, energy resource monitoring, etc. With the technologies of geometry calibration, edge blending and color calibration used, images projected from different projectors could be seamlessly spliced together to be a large image on the screen. Thus more information could be displayed, and stronger immersive experiences could be brought to the viewers to build a virtual reality system.Currently, there are many kinds of large-screen multi-projection seamless tiled display systems on the market. No matter which existing solution is used, the system's power consumption and cost are usually very high, which is not conducive to the systems' popularization. After the study of the existing multi-projection solutions and the seamless splicing algorithms, we propose an FPGA-based large-screen multi-projection seamless tiled display solution in this paper, and several hardware video processing apparatuses are designed and realized. The solution we proposed could realize splicing algorithms, and could achieve low cost and low power consumption at the same time. The main work and innovation of this paper are as follows.1. An FPGA-based large-screen multi-projection seamless tiled display solution is proposed, and a two-step working mode is designed for the system. The two steps are "software-based preprocessing" and "hardware-based real-time processing".2. The existing algorithms for multi-projection seamless tiled display systems are researched. According to the characteristics of FPGA chips, a transformed algorithm for hardware splicing is proposed, and a parameter file for the algorithm is also defined to connect the two steps together.3. Two kinds of FPGA-based Image Calibrater, i.e. Nearest-Interpolation Image Calibrater and Bilinear-Interpolation Image Calibrater, are designed and realized. The Image Calibrater could calibrate a high-resolution video signal in real time, and could output two video signals for projection.4. A kind of FPGA-based Image Splitter is designed and realized. The Image Splitter could split a high-resolution video signal in into three video signals.5. Five kinds of multi-projection seamless tiled display systems, i.e.1×2 dual-projection,1×4 four-projection,1×6 six-projection,2×2 four-projection and 2×3 six-projection, are realized with the above-mentioned Image Calibraters and the Image Splicers, with the advantages of small size, low power consumption and low cost.
