A Research Of News Frame Of Cancer Reports On Newspaper

Cancer is a disease that seriously threatens human health, it has become a worldwide problem. Mass media, as a major source of health information, directly affects the public?s perception of health issues and practice of health behavior. Researching on news frames of cancer reports on newspaper can optimize the newspaper reports on health issues as well as improve the public?s health literacy.News frames are transformations of the objective social reality, which transforms the "natural" event information into a "media" event informati on and eventually affects the "subjective" event information. The constructions of the frames can be divided into three stages:(1) select news information;(2) construct news materials;(3) organize news language. According to the “procedural” analysis tropisms, in the frames of cancer reports on Health News, Science and Technology Daily and People's Daily, the majority of news sources is reporter?s interviews and observation, each has preferred subject, the subjects were reported in neutral tone and news g enre, yet quotations are differently used in these three newspapers.This thesis researched newspaper cancer reports framing from three levels: the “conceptual system level frame”(intention expression), “issue orientation level frame”(subject expression) and “text structural level frame”(theme expression), and came to a conclusion that the nature of different newspaper makes different decisions: conceptual system newspapers prefer “issue frame”, text structural newspapers mainly adopt “episodic frame”, Health News as issue orientation level lays emphasis on “prevention and treatment frame”, Science and Technology Daily focuses on “science information frame”, and People's Daily highlights “policy frame”.Newspaper cancer news reports frame shows a series of characteristics as followed: prevention and treatment frame and medicine frame subtly popularize the knowledge, science information frame has both “professional science” and “public acceptance”, patient frame shows medical humanity concern, scientists frame expands scientific spirit, policy frame highlights common people?s views, value frame and theme frame comply with current issues. Meanwhile, these three newspapers showed different characteristics on frames: Health News adopted “multielement frame” under the idea of audience orientation, Science and Technology Daily adopted the “reading frame” led by science communication, the People's Daily focused on “effects frame” of mainstream ideology.Optimization strategies about newspaper cancer report frames are proposed from micro construction to macro representing. Micro construction optimization includes emphasizing the multiplicity and balance of news source, expanding the breadth and depth of the subjects, keeping the order and rationality of report tone, highlighting the variety and pertinence of report forms and improving the scientificity of news language. Optimization about presenting on macro level requires conceptual system level stick to journalistic professionalism, issue orientation level frame form a balanced construction and text structural level frame is to de-fragmentation.
