Since the 1960~'s,GIS(Geographical Information System)has been widely penetrated in all areas of social life, and it has broad prospects in assisting middle school regional geography teaching.Regional geography is an important part of geography curriculum content, regional cognition accomplishment is one of the four key factors of Geographic Core Literacy,it is also the foundation for the formation of the other three elements(the concept of person quality, comprehensive thinking quality and geographical literacy practice force).GIS,as an emerging geographic information technology, has strong visualization and spatial analysis characteristics which happen to coincide with the needs of regional geography teaching in middle school,GIS assists the regional geography instruction and realizes the diversified presentation of materials. It plays an important role in stimulating student geography learning enthusiasm, promoting students'understanding, analyzing and solving regional geography problems, and improving geographical core literacy. There are many types of GIS software, and most of the software is more professional. At present,a more extensive professional GIS software-ArcGIS and popular GIS software-Google Earth, which are widely used in middle school geography teaching. This study will optimize the combination of GIS software and assist the regional geography teaching in middle school. It will change the way of geography teaching and learning and help improve the effect of geography teaching. The author summarizes and analyzes the domestic and foreign GIS teaching of middle school geography especially the research status of regional geography teaching in middle school, finds that there is a lack of special studies on GIS-assisted regional geography teaching in middle schools, and there has been no study of combining professional GIS software—Arc GIS and popular GIS software—Google Earth to assist the study of regional geography teaching in middle schools. The theoretical foundation of using GIS to assist regional geography teaching in middle school is strong,GIS must play a supporting role in regional geography teaching in middle schools and must be guided by cognitive development theory, information processing theory, and constructivism theory.A questionnaire survey of the regional geography of Third year high school students was conducted. The results showed that the High school students participating in the survey have better regional geography learning and are at higher and intermediate levels. However, students need to strengthen regional geospatial perception capabilities based on spatial orientation and geographic information processing capabilities based on regional geographic maps.GIS-assisted middle school regional geography teaching includs:data management and query, map information browsing, regional visual expression, regional analysis, and regional information hot links. It is advantageous for teachers and students to share regional geography teaching resources, cultivate students'regional positioning ability and regional comprehensive analysis ability, help students establish regional concepts, and diversify the teaching contents of regional geography. The main contents of GIS-assisted middle school regional geography teaching include regional location and distribution, regional characteristics, regional differences, links between regional geographic elements, and regional development and changes.A complete section of GIS-assisted middle school regional geography instructional design case was designed based on the content of the first edition of“Planning for Regional Economic Development”in the first section of“Planning for Regional Economic Development”of the People's Education Press. It hopes to provide reference for GIS-assisted middle school regional geography teaching.
