Fine art, with a long history, is a kind of visualized culture and art category and it is also an artistic practice unique to humans. The school art education mainly includes 3 phases and they are primary school art education, secondary school art education as well as university art education. And for the whole art learning life, art education in lower grades of primary school is a quite important start and it also lays the foundation for the future art learning. The lower grades art education, as a beginning of art learning, bears the responsibility for cultivating the basic art knowledge and skills and for developing good learning habits of the students who newly enter the school. The students of primary grades (5 to 8 years old) are in the schematic stage when they are perceptive and imaginative and when they are not limited by the adults'experience but dominated by inner feeling and painting upon their own willful imagination. When the primary school begins, the art teachers, in order to enrich the images in students' mind and to teach them some basic art skills, need to conduct some demonstrations to guide the students to observe the objects, understand the images, master the techniques of expression and so on. However, in primary grades art education, the demonstration is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, the demonstration broadens the students' horizons; but on the other hand, it limits their imagination and innovation. What's more, some inappropriate demonstrations were adopted by some teachers with a purpose of achieving teaching objecti, ves, which restricts students' thinking. Meanwhile, the primary school students in lower grades, due to the lack of painting ability, cannot draw the pictures that actually appear in their minds; therefore, copying the teachers' demonstrations becomes a habit. Over time, teachers' demonstrations become a stereotype which normalizes and standardizes students' painting ways but also deprives the innocence in their paintings;and as a result, the imagination and creativity of students gradually decrease. This thesis takes recent art demonstration in primary grades as an object, combined with the author's teaching experience, and put forwards the author's opinions on demonstration teaching. It consists of four parts. Firstly, it discusses the existing problems of art demonstration teaching in primary grades and analyzes them form 3 aspects: the frequency, complexity and difficulty of demonstration; secondly, it states the functions of art demonstration teaching in primary grades and indicates the importance of art demonstration teaching by certificated examples; thirdly, it presents the methods of art demonstration teaching in primary grades with real classes'situation and students' works and analyzes these methods; finally, this thesis concludes the existing problems, functions and methods mentioned above and, combined with the author's practical experience, designs some strategies for art demonstration teaching in primary grades. The aim of this thesis is trying to find some suitable methods of art demonstration teaching in primary grades for the author and some other art teachers, which allows the primary students to master basic art skills without affecting their extraordinary imagination in the primary stage of art learning.
