Lack of efficient vocabulary learning methods and strategies,it is difficult to master sufficient vocabulary,then language learning will be like water without source,not to mention gaining the language communicative abilities.Therefore,it is very important to guide the students to master vocabulary learning strategies in language teaching.However,in junior schools today,most English teachers teach vocabulary with the help of International Phonetic Symbols(IPA),which increase the burden of learning because students should learn both the knowledge of phonetics and the meaning of new words.Besides,the method cannot help students construct the relation between vocabulary pronunciation and letters.Without the help of efficient vocabulary learning strategy,students tend to lose interest and enthusiasm in learning English.Phonics brings hope for junior one English vocabulary teaching.Phonics is a vocabulary learning method commonly used by children who are native English speakers.It helps the students to learn 26 letters and the pronunciation rules of letter combination,so that it can help establish a conception between letters,letter combinations and pronunciation.Thus,the students can master the reading and spelling rules,so as to achieve the effect of "Being able to read when seeing a word,and being able to write it down when listening to a word".At present,although the effect of phonics approach in English teaching has been gradually recognized,and it has been used in various kinds of tutorial English classes,but not yet really applied in English classrooms.In view of this,the present research aims to explore how to apply phonics to junior one English vocabulary teaching,to discuss whether phonics approach can improve students’ English vocabulary reading and spelling ability,and to investigate whether phonics approach can enhance students’ interest and confidence in English learning.The present research is based on constructivism theory,language transfer theory.Constructivism theory can explain how students are able to construct the understanding of the correlation between letters and sounds of words after learning certain number of vocabulary.Language transfer theory can explain how the students can acquire the consonants in the pronunciation of words with the positive transfer oftheir first language.Two classes in a Middle School of Jinan are chosen as the research subjects.The number of students,the proportion of boys and girls and the general English level are similar in these two classes.The research lasts for a semester,from September,2016 to December,2016.The present study employs the research methods of questionnaires,case study,test and interview.The procedure of this research is divided into three phases.In the first phase data is collected before experiment,the second phase is the process of experiment and in the third phase data is analyzed and discussed.In the procedure of the experiment,the advantages and disadvantages of the phonics approach are demonstrated through case study.After the experiment,the data are analyzed and discussed,and the research results can prove the effectiveness of applying phonics approach to junior one English vocabulary teaching.Through detailed analysis and discussion,this research finds that phonics can be applied to junior one English vocabulary teaching,Besides,it can improve students’ vocabulary reading and spelling ability.At the same time,phonics can stimulate the students’ interest and confidence in learning English vocabulary.In addition,the study has put forward some suggestions on how to apply phonics to junior one English vocabulary teaching.It is sincerely hoped that this study can promote and shed light on English vocabulary teaching in junior middle schools. |
