With the implementation of the NCEE(National College Entrance Examination) reform on English subject, which will be a cornerstone of quality education. The aim is to develop students’ positive attitudes, thinking skills, practical abilities, cultural awareness and autonomy through the language learning process. At the same time, according to the latest outline of the NCEE in Liaoning province, the requirement for senior high school students’ vocabulary increase from 3000 to 3500, which is a challenge for both teachers and students. Thus, the vocabulary teaching in senior high school becomes more important and necessary.Vocabulary teaching methods started from 17 th century. Although both the US and British have a profound research of phonics study, the main research object is the native speakers, especially for infants and young children. Nevertheless, this thesis has brought the forefront a focus on the effect of phonics and the expansion of senior students’ vocabulary size.Phonics learning is a valid aid for students to master the enunciation and the spelling. When it comes to vocabulary learning, indirect vocabulary learning plays an important role. By decoding and encoding the words, students can learn the words faster, and with the help of certain contexts, students can guess the meaning of it, thus to enlarge vocabulary effectively. To prove the hypothesis of this, the author conducted an experiment of it. The author selected two classes in a senior high school; the control group uses the traditional method to memorize the certain words, while the experimental group acquires the words under the aid of phonics and context. As the results reveal, the experiment is valid. Therefore, we can conclude, phonics has an effective influence on expansion students’ vocabulary, and this also presents a new teaching reference on vocabulary teaching.In addition, the author also lists some procedures of teaching phonics, and advantages for senior high students to learn phonics. Meanwhile, the thesis provides some approaches to spell English words, and other reference for further study.
