To enhance the efficiency of English classes and to achieve autonomous learning and exploratory learning which New English Curriculum Standards(2003)advocates,many experts, scholars and teachers have conducted a lot of researches. In recent years, teaching guided by guided-learning plans is becoming more and more popular,so researches related to the guided-learning plan are greatly increased.Of them, the application of teaching model guided by learning plans is mostly studied. In other words, the researches are mainly about how to take advantage of guided-learning plans to improve classes' efficiency to the greatest extent. What's more, with the development of learning plans, more and more studies from the perspective of subjects appear.Compared with other subjects,guided-learning plans in terms of English are less, not to mention those especially aiming at the design of English learning plans and offering a case module. In view of this situation, the thesis is to research and discuss the design of the guided-learning plan in English teaching at rural senior high schools and improve English teaching at rural senior high schools. This thesis mainly studies the English teaching of senior high school in NO.2 Middle School of Yibin County. It is a typical rural senior high school, most of whose students come from the countryside and are poor in English.Guided-learning plans have been used in English classes for a year at the school, but the result is not satisfying. The essential problem is that the present learning plans are not appropriate for students in the school. In order to design better guided-learning plans,pre-questionnaire and post-questionnaire were handed out to 124 students in the school that belong to three different classes at different levels. Then six English teachers with different teaching experience are interviewed. Then combined with literature research, three aspects on designing guided-learning plans are studied.First, what are the problems for the present guided-learning plans used in English classes in rural senior high schools? Second, what are the factors which affect teachers' designing guided-learning plans? Third, what are the principles and ways that can optimize the design of guided-learning plans? On the basis of constructivist learning theory, the zone of proximal development, discovery learning theory and scaffolding instruction, etc, the results of the research are as follows. The problems in present guided-learning plans in rural senior high school's English teaching are found. Some guided-learning plans are equal to teaching plans. Some guided-learning plans lack specific guidance. Some guided-learning plans don't embody important and difficult points. Some guided-learning plans don't take students' differences into consideration. Some guided-learning plans are reduced to exercises. The factors which affect teachers' designing guided-learning plans include the teachers' degrees of emphasis to the guided-learning plan, teachers' theoretical design literacy of guided-learning plans, teachers' acquaintance about the students and teachers' efforts of designing the guided-learning plan. The thesis holds that in the process of designing and optimizing guided-learning plans, some principles and approaches should be followed. That is to say, students should be the center all the time and their individual differences should be taken into a full consideration. The contents should be presented gradually from easiness to difficulty in the form of question. In this way students can be better guided to explore new knowledge and helped to build effective learning strategies. At the same time,it is beneficial for students to develop the good habit of autonomous learning. In addition, the guided-learning plans can be designed in groups with teachers who have their own advantages, which can not only make each teacher take advantage of his or her own strong point but also improve the quality of learning plans.Meanwhile it can also reduce the burden of teachers.
