After the development since ancient times,the Chinese textbook has had a complete structure consisting of texts,supplementary reading,exercise and knowledge.Exercise,as an important component of the Chinese textbook,helps students review their Chinese knowledge and strengthen their language ability,and thus plays an important role in the learning process of the students.This research composes of the following four parts:The first part is an analysis of the exercise design of the PEP Chinese Textbook for the Seventh-Grade.The PEP Chinese Textbook for the Seventh-Grade meet the quantity requirement of the National Curriculum Standards,namely “limited amount but carefully designed”.It comprises of various formats,ranging from memory and comprehension-oriented exercises,through application exercises to development ones,which are divided into different tiers of difficulty,and fall into the students' zone of proximal development.Second,a principles,characteristics and functions of the PEP Chinese textbook of the seventh grade.Designers of textbook exercises should follow the principles of moderate difficulty,openness,improvement,high quality,integrity and hierarchy,so as to allow the students to achieving cooperation,interesting,inspiring and flexible learning.Third,a comparison between the PEP Chinese textbook and the KeysChinese textbook for the seventh-grades.The KeysChinese has texts of shorter length and fewer exercises of memory but more of applying knowledge to real life,while the REP textbook has texts of longer length,and more exercises about the text details,exercises more closely linked to the text and memory and less focused on the real life.the KeysChinese textbook more attention to the operation,while the PEP exercise pays more attention to the theoretical level.The fourth part points out the problems with the exercises of the PEP Chinese Textbook for the Seventh-Grade and proposes corresponding suggestions.There exists six defects with the PEP Chinese Textbook for the Seventh-Grade,and they are monotonous pattern,inflexible answer-setting,low proportion of independent practice-and inquiry-based exercises,limited relevance with the real life,weakening the role of basic knowledge,and little connection with the students' learning conditions.As a result,strategies are proposed correspondingly for further improvement,namely diversifying the exercises,introducing varied formats,developing flexible answers,adding independent exercises,being more relevant to the students' real life,increasing the proportion of the tests of basic knowledge,and considering different local conditions.
