The traditional teaching methods can not meet the needs of the learners of the new era owing to the information explosion. Under that circumstances, colleges and universities are particularly motivated to use online courses to teach students, in which online discussion is the determinants. Due to its openness and flexibility, online discussion is more likely to facilitate the sharing of knowledge and information, provide room for reflections during teacher-students and student-student interaction, thus promoting students' critical thinking skills. However, the following problems must be solved for the better development of the online discussion. Such as the unreasonable topic design, the sole means of discussion and the process is disorganized and unsupervised, etc. They bring the disadvantages like low participation and contribution of the members. Therefore, how to design the topic, to increase participants' motivation and divergent thinking are mainly worked on by the teachers and researchers.This thesis Mainly using the survey method, based on the research of design and participation observation, focused on the study of the Design and Practice of Online discussion in Network Courses, which includes analyze the factors and principles of the online courses, design the online discussions of the “Audio-visual Language” on the basis of the study in domestic and international literature. In addition, analyzing the process of the discussion, doing paper investigation and interview are also applied to improve the practice methods.Through the design and practice, this thesis mainly draws the following conclusions:(1) Premise that designing meaningful online discussion activities is explicitly principles and elements of designing online discussion;(2) Carrying out an online discussion activities can significantly enhance the learners' learning outcomes and their capabilities;(3) The main factors of affecting the effectiveness on online discussion are time limit, learners' effort, the relationship between learners, timely feedback and evaluation of teachers;(4) Put forward the strategy to optimize the design of the online discussion.
