Self-directed learning is an essential element for modern-society students’ long-term development, and also one of the important change on students’ learning styles under the new curriculum reform. Meanwhile, in mathematics, self-directed learning plays a very important role for enhancing students’ thinking and exercising learning ability. However, in the current mathematics education, on the one hand,regardless of students’ feeling, mathematics teachers can not change the past way of teaching, they are still using the traditional "spoon-feeding" way to teach in the classroom, putting themselves on the subject position and "manipulationing" students’ learning, resulting low enthusiasm in learning. On the other hand, students have no interest in learning mathematics, the motivation to learn entirely from parents’ and teachers’ coercion, there are few students learning actively without them.In order to study the students’ current situation of self-directed learning on math,method of literature analysis was used to compose a junior high school mathematics questionnaire for students, also, interviews for students and teachers were hold and classroom observation was made.Through the study we found that the current students’ self-directed learning situation is not very optimistic, mainly are as follows:(1) on the students’ learning motivation, students are lack of interest in learning mathematics, but also are motivated to learn mathematics from their parents and teachers pressure;(2) on learning methods,low-grade students perform better than high-grade, but most students are still lack of good mathematics learning methods;(3) on the planning and management of learning time, most of the students do not make their own learning plan, and it is also difficult to it if they make plans;(4) on self-monitoring, about half of the students can manage their own learning behavior;(5) on the choice of the learning environment, many students can not take advantage of existing learning resources. According to the results, the following improvement measures and suggestions are proposed:(1) teachers improve the understanding of self-directed learning, change the traditional teaching methods;(2)increasing the interest in mathematics learning, strengthening mathematicsself-motivation;(3) enhancing students’ math learning ability and teach them mathematical self-directed learning methods;(4) to strengthen students’ self-monitoring and regulation, to improve students’ self-reflection capability;(5) to build a good environment for self-directed learning, to teach students to seek outside help initiatively.
