Self-directed learning is the inevitable requirement of today's education for students, and it is also essential for perfect development of individual students. Moreover, the unique feature of math discipline requires students to have certain independent learning ability. Therefore,it is necessary to understand the characteristics of self-directed learning of math and then apply an effective educational intervention.By combing the existing researches, this study attempts to explore the factors that may affect the selfdirected learning of math, analyze the influencing mode and extent of each factor, and provide some reference materials for relevant education and teaching.Through the analysis of existing related researches, the study extracts the factors that may affect the self-directed learning of math, and constructs a hypothetical model of the factors affecting such learning. On the basis of the existing questionnaires,a questionnaire suitable for the study was prepared, and a questionnaire survey was conducted among 214 students from two ordinary junior high schools in Chengdu.A formal model of the factors affecting self-directed learning of math is obtained through analyzing the sample data, further screening and summarizing the collected influencing factors and modifying the hypothesis model.Findings of the study:1.There are 9 influencing factors, which are divided into 6 internal ones and 3 external ones. The internal ones are “self-efficacy”,“learning style”,“learning attitude” and “target setting”,“learning interest” and “learning strategies and methods”,while the external ones are “impact of others”,“teaching methods” and “school resources”.2.The self-directed learning of math does not differ between genders, but differ among grades. The self-directed learning ability for math of the second grade students is lower than that of the first grade students.3.Among the nine influencing factors of self-directed learning of math, for the six internal ones, there are small differences between genders, while for the external ones, differences are significant between genders. For such influencing factors as “selfefficacy”,“learning style”,“target setting”,“learning strategies and methods” and “school resources”,great differences exist among grades, while for the factors like “learning attitude” and “learning interest”,“impact of others” and “teaching methods”,there are no big differences among grades;comparing with differences between genders in respect of these factors, the differences among grades are not quite obvious.4.Nine influencing factors all have a direct impact on self-directed learning of math, but the extent differs. The most influential factor is “self-efficacy”.In addition to the direct impact of self-directed learning of math, there is mutual influence between multiple influencing factors.
