This is a report on the translation of Improving Decision Support for Infectious Disease Prevention and Control. The translation material was a report published by the RAND Corporation, mainly introducing the status of infectious diseases prevention and control and the relevant decision support models and methods. It was a task assigned by Shanghai Information Center for Life Sciences,Chinese Academy of Sciences, through which large amounts of cutting-edge bio-medical information can be accessed. To be published on the Scientific Research Dynamics Monitoring Express,a bimonthly journal about scientific information, the task must be completed with accuracy, professionalism and readability. In the course of translation, under Eugene Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory, several possible methods have been explored by summarizing the relatively difficult words and sentences encountered in the process of translation. Some of the vocabulary and sentence difficulties in the original text are presented in this report to reflect the commonness of vocabulary and sentence translation for technical English, and then the author considers, analyzes and summarizes them as the object. The lexical difficulties were classified as follows: unified terminology, item with multiple translations and polysemy.Based on functional equivalence theory and the author’s translation experience, the following methods are put forward, literal translation, free translation, addition, sequential translation, splitting translation and reverse translation.Another major difficulty in scientific translation is the long sentences. The complex sentence structure, rigorous logic and the nesting of meaning in long sentences make it difficult for readers to understand. After analyzing difficult long sentences, the author advocates the use of literal translation, reverse translation and splitting translation methods to solve the relevant problems.Through the case analysis and method summary, this report is expected to inspire the translator colleagues engaged in scientific translation.
