The thriving International Chinese language education has put a higher requirements towards Chinese reference books and the compiling of the reference books for learning Chinese as a foreign language is increasingly concerned by researchers.According to general statistics,more than 130 reference books have been published.However,the quality of these references books remains uneven though the total amount of the books is considerable.Moreover,it is urgent to gain progresses in many aspects of the research related to lexicography,since the foundations of the relevant theory and practices over compiling these reference books are unsystematic.As an essential part of the microstructure of a dictionary,the importance of exemplifications is self-evident.At present,nevertheless,the macro and micro researches over the exemplifications are less engaged in the previous studies.There are also many unscientific and unreasonable problems.For example,the exemplifications are outdated,the contents redundant,the allocations of the type unreasonable,and the contents arranged without clear classification of stages and hierarchies in The Dictionary for Learning Chinese as a Foreign Language.Given what have been mentioned above,on the basis of summarizing the previous studies concerned about the functions,setting principles and the theory basis for exemplifications,the thesis takes the The Dictionary of the Usage of Chinese Common Word as the research object and extracts out the verbs from the sample pages based on the dictionary.Then the numbers,types and length of these exemplifications are all getting counted and analyzed.Through combing the quantitative analysis and questionnaire research,the thesis analyzes and evaluates the existing problems and the relative merits among those exemplifications so as to put forward some modified suggestions over the compilation of the dictionary and its exemplifications in The Dictionary for Learning Chinese as a Foreign Language.The whole thesis is arranged into six chapters.The research background,purpose,significance of the research,investigating objects and research methods are elaborated in the first chapter.Chapter two gives an overall analysis and investigation over some exemplifications appearing in dictionaries.The previous studies concerned about the functions,setting principles and the theory basis for exemplifications are also summarized here.In Chapter three,the verbs from the sample pages based on The Dictionary of the Usage of Chinese Common Word are all extracted out,and the numbers,types and length of these exemplifications are all getting counted and analyzed from the perspective as an elementary researcher.Some exemplifications with problems are found and get further analyzed here.In chapter four,through combing the quantitative analysis and questionnaire research,the thesis analyzes and evaluates the existing problems among those exemplifications and the relative merits by investigating the use of the dictionary among foreign students and doing a satisfaction survey over some sample verbs from the dictionary.The fifth chapter,based on the investigation from the previous chapter,puts forward some modified suggestions over the compilation of The Dictionary for Learning Chinese as a Foreign Language,and then proposes boldly the idea of developing and compiling multimedia dictionary based on the platform of smartphone and tablet computer.Besides summarizing the contents of the whole thesis,the last chapter also discusses the shortcomings and propose the future research direction.
