A Study On Exemplification Of Learner’s Dictionary Based On The Function Theory Of Lexicography

Since the compilation of Chinese English Dictionary and Chinese French Dictionary for foreign students by Beijing Language and Culture College in 1976,the compilation practice and exemplifying studies of “learning dictionary” have been very rich.Professor Cai Yongqiang of the School of Chinese Studies and Cultural Exchange in the Renmin University of China once calculated that there were 73 Chinese learning dictionaries published in China.However,it is a pity that no popular “characters learning dictionary” published in China has been published.Especially in recent years,the theoretical discussion and teaching practice with "character" as the basic unit have been emerging.Through the investigation,this paper finds that the online bilingual dictionary Pleco is very popular among Chinese learning groups in the most countries of the world,but there are still big problems in its exemplifying ways.Because of this,the paper finds the possibility of the exemplifying research of “online Chinese learning dictionary”.Therefore,based on the theory of "Functional Lexicography",this paper has determined six dimensions of exemplifying survey in the pleco.Then,this paper referred 376 Chinese characters of the Integrated Chinese Textbook · Simplified Characters Level 1 · Part 1as samples,and summarized the problem of exemplifying ways in Pleco through the investigation.At the same time,this paper also conducted a questionnaire survey on 253 students,in order to obtain targeted and practical dictionary optimization suggestions in exemplifying.This paper started the study from the following three parts.The first part is preface.This paper briefly introduced the reason for choosing this topic,and summarized and reviews the development of the learning character dictionary and its exemplifying principles.The second part is the main ideas of the paper,which is divided into three Chapters:Chapter 1 is the feasibility analysis of the Functional Lexicography Theory used to guide the research of Pleco’s exemplification study.Firstly,this paper explained the arrangement style and the characteristics of its exemplifying in Pleco and then introduced Sven Tarp and its Functional Lexicography Theory.Secondly,this paper discussed the possible problems faced in the information receiving and output stages of user dictionary consulting activities according to this theory,so as to illustrate the feasibility of applying the Functional Lexicography Theory to Pleco’s exemplification study.Chapter 2 is the evaluation of the Pleco’s exemplification.This chapter focused on two survey assessments.The first was a text-based exemplifying assessment,which identified six aspects of exemplifying problems that affected dictionary usage;the second exemplifying assessment was based on user experience,which conducted a questionnaire survey on users.Through the two exemplifying assessments on Pleco,this paper in order to find the exemplifying problems that can most affect the user’s information reception and output in the dictionary consultation process.Chapter 3 is optimized suggestions of Pleco’s exemplification.This paper put forward six suggestions on the exemplifying optimization in Pleco.The last part is the conclusion.The paper summarized the evaluation results of exemplifying cases based on Pleco text and users’ experience,and then pointed out the possible improvements and expectations of the further study.
