Since the Western Han Dynasty(202 BC-8 AD),the Silk Road has been the bridge for Sino-Western cultural communications and an important economic and trade exchange channel among China,Central Asia and European countries. The source text of this translation program is the first 5 chapters from the tourist biography New Silk Road in My Way written by the famous host Wang Zhi.It mainly tells the story about Wang Zhi(the host of The Silk Road Line)and the journey, nearly 30 thousand miles,of his motorcade from Xi'an to Rome(the destination of the ancient Silk Road)along the ancient Silk Road.Under the guidance of the functional equivalence theory, the writer solves translation problems respectively at the linguistic and the cultural levels, such as the translation of the names of countries in Western Regions,four-character phrases,Chinese sentences without subject and classics quoted in the source text based on the type and characteristics of the source text.Besides, through this translation practice and some cases analyses the writer summarizes some methods to translate the language that characterizes by Chinese culture, including transliteration plus annotations,take-ism and amplification at the lexical level;division, voice conversion and subject supplement at the syntactic level;quote, literal translation with annotations and literal translation at the cultural level. The report is deemed as both an introduction to silk culture to the foreign world and a good chance of translating practice. The writer hopes that it may enlighten other MTI students to improve their skills of translating relevant materials.
