This is an E-C translation project for MTI students. The source text is selected from a pictographic memoir China’s Reincarnation of the Old Silk Road, authored by Audrey Ronning Topping, daughter of Ambassador Chester Ronning,Head of Mission at the Canadian Embassy in Nanjing. She is a remarkable American photojournalist and PROZE Prize winner. The translation project comprises two parts. The first part is the source text and its translation;the second part is a critical commentary on the translation. The critical commentary consists of background and significance of the project, stylistic analysis and translation difficulties, theoretical guidance and translation approaches and case study. In 2013,President Xi Jinping proposed to jointly build the Silk Road Economic Belt.Audrey Ronning Topping took this opportunity and created this pictographic memoir,China s Reincarnation of the Old Silk Road,to record personal experience and discuss the history, culture, and religions of countries along the Old Silk Road.As a literature work,China’s Reincarnation of the Old Silk Road provides readers with a brand new angle to look at history and cultures along the old Silk Road, which precisely meet the needs of Chinese people to be better involved in the Belt and Road Initiative; As source text, its stylistic features increase translation difficulties.Under the guidance of Eugene A.Nida’s functional equivalence, translation approaches including reinventing the sentence structure, following the original syntactic order, turning passive voice into active voice, semantic extension and explication are employed to seek "the closest natural equivalent to the source language messagel".
