This is a report on the translation of exhibition text of Museum of Education of SNNU(Shaanxi Normal University).Nowadays,museum plays a significant role in our life,not only enriching our cultural life,but also being an important carrier of China's thousands of years history.Therefore,the translation of exhibition text of museum has significant influence on the cultural exchange between China and other countries and also is significant to the "going out" of Chinese culture.School education in China has a long history,which is close related to the museum.The establishment of Museum of Education of SNNU is of great significance to school education and the translation of its exhibition text is conducive to help more visitors without Chinese background to learn about the history of China's education.Taking the historical development of Chinese school education as the basic clue,the exhibition text includes four chapters:school education in ancient China;school education in modern China;school education in the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia border region and school education in Hong Kong,Macao and Taiwan.Besides,the education under the enslavement of the Japanese Puppet Regime during the War of Resistance Against Japan is attached.The text selected in this report is the historical data of school education in ancient China and a part of historical data of school education in modern China.The text is an expository writing and belongs to the practical text,which aims to transmit information and strengthens the facts.The content of the text can be divided into two parts:names of the exhibits and words on the display boards.The exhibits include many ancient books,documents,teaching instruments,imperial examination papers and so on,the names of which are the difficulties and key points in the translation.Words on the display boards are the related historical facts or the detailed information about the exhibits.This part is relatively easy to translate,but some sentences in classical Chinese and some culture-loaded words also need to be noticed.Through the analysis of the type and characteristics of the project text,the author chooses Newmark's communicative translation and semantic translation as the theoretical guidance of the translation practice.In order to make the translation achieve the expected effect,the author applies literal translation,free translation,adaption,transliteration,omission,explanation and some other translation methods and skills on different problems meeting in the translation.In the whole translation practice,the translation of names of ancient books should be given special focus,for which the author summarized four methods:free translation,adaption,transliteration and explanation in the last chapter.Of course circumstances alter cases.The author learned a lot from this translation task.Here are some personal feelings:First,the real translation task,different from the daily practice,should be finished according to the client's requirement and deadline with high quality.Second,both Chinese to English translation and English to Chinese translation are based on a correct understanding of the source text so as to avoid misinterpretation,which is also a taboo in translation;Third,the real translation task emphasizes the practicability,which requires translators to adopt appropriate translation strategies in accordance with the features,purpose and target readers of the source text;Fourth,for a translation team,the cooperation and communication between each other is very important;Besides,improving translators' language skills and controlling ability between the source language and the target language are a difficult but urgent task.In addition,a good translator should have a knowledge of various fields and be "Jake of all trades".
