| This report is based on a Chinese-English translation project of guests’ speeches at the 2019 China-ASEAN Vocational Education Exhibition and Forum,which are the most reliable documents for ASEAN leaders and university representatives to understand the local specific projects,advantages and preferential policies.The source texts are concise and accurate,containing a large number of abstract nouns,disyllabic words and expressions with Chinese characteristics.Syntactically,there are many long Chinese sentences with complex composition and rich information.In general,they are accurate,purposeful,targeted and political,and belong to informative texts.On the basis of a detailed description of the background of the translation project,the language features of the original text,translation requirements,pre-translation preparation and translation process,the report uses Newmark’s semantic/communicative translation theory to analyze the problems encountered in the translation process as well as their solutions,methods,strategies and basis.The main findings and conclusions of the case analysis include: for education-related and politics-related expressions with Chinesecharacteristics,the translation methods applied include amplification,omission,transliteration,literal translation and annotation;for long sentences with several topics,lots of information clusters and parallel components,with the help of the Immediate Constituent Analysis,the immediate components of sentences are analyzed from the external form of syntactic structure and the translation problems are solved by segmentation;for long sentences with logical sequences that are quite different from English expression habits,the Core Words Analysis is applied to figure out the logical relationship such as primary-secondary relationship,statement-conclusion relationship,cause-result relationship,behavior-place relationship and condition-result relationship and the restructuring method is used to solve translation problems. |
