Comparison Of Two Strategies In Chinese-English Consecutive Interpreting With Text

Unnatural pauses are very common phenomena in the process of C-E spontaneous interpretation.Improper pauses include silent pauses and filled pauses.All kinds of improper pauses in interpretation not only influence or restrict the quality of interpretation,but also cause the difficulty for audience to understand the original text,and they may have doubts about the speaker's intentions,even worse,they may consider the interpreter not qualified for the work.Therefore,based on the previous theories of the definition and classification of the unnatural pause,this paper aims to explore the causes of the unnatural pause by analyzing the original language and target language of the case in detail.The author classified the causes into input factors and output factors.Input factors are caused either by the difficulty in understanding the original text,which includes numbers and unfamiliar concepts,or by the speech rate of the speaker,which leaves little time for the interpreter to analyze the information.Output factors are related to the level of interpreter's target language proficiency,and the challenges posed by the structural differences between Chinese and English.After exploring the causes of unnatural pauses,this paper puts forward corresponding strategies to cope with this phenomenon.It is hoped that this study will help other interpreters to reduce the frequency of unnatural pauses and improve the quality and efficiency of interpretation in Chinese-English simultaneous practice.
