| In the field of simultaneous interpretation, unnatural pauses are regarded as animportant criteria to assess an interpreter’s performance. Unnatural pauses will notonly negatively impact the quality of interpretation, but also undermine thecredibility of the interpreter. This practice report is based on simultaneousinterpretations of ‘UAE young ambassadors’ program’ done by the author and herpartner. It mainly studies unnatural pauses occurred during the performance bycollecting the records materials making transcript and analyzing in detail.The recording material was made into transcript. By analyzing the originalinformation and interpreter’s performance, this paper tries to solve three problems asfollows:1) What are the most frequent pauses in the case?2) What are the causes ofunnatural pauses in simultaneous interpretation?3) What are the possible methods toavoid and save unnatural pauses in simultaneous interpretation?After an in-depth analysis, the most frequently occurred problems are as silentpauses, drawls, repetitions, corrections, ums and ahs and incompleteness. The maincauses are as follows:1) Input information: complicated words, proper nouns, andnames; long sentences; fast speed; numbers.2) Output information: languageproficiency; short-term memory; listening; delivering skills and organizing abilities.3) Non-interpreting factors: nervousness, facility, experience, andpartner-cooperation. However, interpreters could avoid and save unnatural pauses bylong-term and short-term trainings and practices. |
