A Translation Report Of Yellow Music: Media Culture And Colonial Modernity In The Chinese Jazz Age

The Yellow Music of the title is a genre of popular music that flourished on the eastern seaboard of China and beyond in the late 1920 s and 1930 s,describe by Andrew Jones as “a hybrid genre of American jazz,Hollywood film music and Chinese folk music”.Yellow Music:Media Culture and Colonial Modernity in the Chinese Jazz is one of the rare publication in the field of the ethnomusicology whose cross-over appeal is immediately apparent.This book has provided new perspectives for students of modern Chinese music history,placing music center stage in the cultural and political debates of the interwar period.It is less a study in musicology than a study of the cultural and political debates surrounding the musical recordings of the time.Nowadays,with foreign scholars' increasing interest on Chinese traditional music,more and more Chinese music study emerge,which embodies that Chinese music is gradually moving onto the international stage.Therefore,the accuracy and preciseness of the academic music translation become more and more important.Based on the translation of this academic music literature Yellow Music: Media Culture and colonial Modernity in the Chinese Jazz,the author attempts to explore and to tackle common translating issues in this field under the guidance of skopos theory.This report is made up of four chapters.The first part is task description,including the background and significance of source text.The second part aims at introducing translation process and skopos theory which applied during the process.The third part focuses on difficulties and case study under the principle of skopos theory,which pays much attention on analysis and discussion of difficulties.In the last part,a brief conclusion and comments on the shortcomings will be made,and to put forward some suggestions on academic music translation.
