Since the 1980 s,Chinese scholars have been more interested in the study of overseas sinology, which has been a trend in the academic community.A variety of Western academic works and papers about sinology have been translated and published in China. All this has further enriched and deepened our understanding of Chinese classics and our own cultural identity.Academic works are research-oriented,which are quite different from literature or popular readings. The translation of Western academic works not only has a huge impact on the academic community in China, but also promotes cultural exchanges between China and the West. Therefore, more attention should be paid to academic translation. It is worthwhile to discuss and study the methods and techniques for improving the quality of academic translation. This report is based on the E-C translation of the sixth chapter of an academic work by Joseph Roe Allen,In the Voice of Others: Chinese Music Bureau Poetry, which focuses on the study of Music Bureau poetry or yuefu poetry within the conventions of intratextuality.Under the guidance of skopos theory, this report aims to explore the translation methods and techniques of academic works. The source text has its own distinctive characteristics, such as lots of nominalization structures, attributive clauses and parentheses. This thesis mainly consists of four chapters. The first chapter is about task description, including task background, research status of yuefu poetry at home and abroad, purpose and significance. The second chapter elaborates on the translation process. The next one focuses on three main problems encountered by the translator and the translation methods and techniques employed under the guidance of skopos theory. The last chapter is the conclusion of this study, including unsolved problems and relevant thinking as well as inspirations and expectations for future study and work.
