The author of the thesis aims to study the textbooks of teaching Chinese as a second language between mainland China and Chinese Taibei.In particular,the author chooses two distinctive textbooks——Practical Audio-Visual Chinese from Chinese Taibei and Chinese Tutorial from mainland China and make comparisons,which incorporate the purpose of compiling,the overall structures of the textbooks,texts,phonetics,vocabularies,grammars and practices.The main purpose of the two textbooks is to cultivate the communicative competence of Chinese.Furthermore,the texts are topic-oriented and the contents are all from people's real lives.Additionally,the texts are presented in the form of dialogues.The topics involved in the two textbooks are similar and the same type of topic is distributed intensively.The grammatical points of the textbooks deriving from texts have intermediate language to help understandings.What is more,a considerable number of example sentences are used to help the language learners to understand and master grammatical rules.The differences of the two textbooks are as follows: Broadly speaking,the content of the textbook from Chinese Taibei is far more interesting as a whole.Whereas the textbook from mainland China is more functional and lack of interest.From the perspective of phonetics,two different notion systems are adopted in textbooks of Chinese Taibei and mainland China.From the perspective of new Chinese characters,the most distinctive difference lies in the number of new Chinese characters and the use of traditional or simplified Chinese characters.From the perspective of grammar,the number of grammatical rules in the textbook of Chinese Taibei is moderate whereas the other way around in Chinese Tutorial.With regard to the arrangements of grammatical rules and explanatory notes,textbook from Chinese Taibei provides specific explanations to the grammatical points of the texts by using intermediate language instead of Chinese.The follow-up section is featured with substantial example statements and corresponding practices to test whether the learners have completely acquired the grammatical rules or not.On the other hand,though textbook from mainland China enumerates grammatical rules of the texts and provides example statements,there is no practice attached afterwards.From the perspective of practices,Chinese Tutorial is characterized by practices of overall skills,but Practical Audio-Visual Chinese focuses on practicing certain skills.By making analyses and comparisons about two kinds of textbooks,the author gives some suggestions.Respectively they are: Firstly,adding flavor ofinterests to the content of the texts and specifying the functions early in the textbooks.Secondly,arranging units and lesson periods on the basis of the learners' needs.Glossary is supposed to be simple and concise.Thirdly,choosing various genres of texts with different background information.The topics of the texts are supposed to be diversified and meet the needs of the society.The contents of the texts are supposed to be real and meaningful and obtained from people's daily lives.Fourthly,textbooks of mainland China and Chinese Taibei are advised to use Pinyin.There is supposed to be an identical syllabus of Chinese characters which could be illustrated by using different methods.Lastly,the number of grammatical items of the textbooks is supposed to rationalized.With regard to practices,element and skill practices are indispensable.The number of practices are supposed to be reasonable and the difficulties of the practices should increase gradually.
