On Metaphor Translation Methods In The Annuals Of The Kingdoms In The East Zhou Dynasty From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

For the purpose of facilitating cultural propagation,more Chinese ancient classics are translated to other languages and spread throughout the world.The English translation of the Annuals of the Kingdoms in the East Zhou Dynasty is also based on this original intention.The Annuals of the Kingdoms in the East Zhou Dynasty is an historical romance history novel that recorded the stories happened from the year 789 B.C.,the end of West Zhou Dynasty,to the year 221 B.C.,when Qin united other six kingdoms.The author picked chapter 95 to chapter 100 to translate.The original text amounting to around 40,000 characters in the whole is all finished independently by the author.Guided by the Skopos theory,the report intends to discuss the translation methods of metaphors that appear in five chapters.The author finds that among the total thirty-three metaphors from the selected chapters,four translation methods are mainly employed: reproducing the same image in the target language,replacing the same image in the source language with a standard target language,conversion of metaphor to sense and reproducing the same metaphor combined with sense.Under the guidance of Skopos theory,the author tries to maintain the style and form of the original text and deliver the cultural connotation of the metaphor.In the translation process,the author finds that when way of thinking or concept of a certain metaphor is the same or similar in the cultures of source text and the target language,the translation method of reproducing the same image in the target language is employed;when the thinking mode or conception of a certain object is widely different between cultures of source text and target language,conversion of metaphor to sense or reproducing the same metaphor combined with sense and replacing the same image in the source language with a standard target language,are used to fulfill anticipated goals.
