A Project Report On The Chinese To English Translation Of National Food Safety Standards

Standards refer to special documents that are made to create the best order within a certain field. As globalization becomes overwhelming, the formulation and exchange of national standards in different industries have witnessed great increase and the translation of national standards also increases day by day. To meet the requirements of China's admission to WTO and foreign activities of standardization,General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the People's Republic of China (the former China State Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision) has translated a series of national standards since 1997 and issued guides for such translation in order to promote the internationalization of Chinese standards.The author was commissioned by Gllinking Information Technology Co., Ltd. to translate some national food safety standards from May to June in 2016. Such texts feature technical and mandatory expressions, making the translation more challenging.Based on this practice, the report, guided by Reiss' text typology, will analyze major difficulties from the aspects of term translation and management, translation of Chinese long sentences and achievement of coherence at the discourse level. Web search engines and computer-aided translation software are used to solve problems of term translation and terminology management. Chinese long sentences are divided into several parts and passive voices are used to make my translation accessible.Besides, proper pronouns and conjunctions are utilized to make my translation coherent. This report aims to reveal features of national standard texts and provide applicable translation strategies for the translation of such texts, further to provide positive reference to the field of English translation of national standards whose development is still in its infancy.
