This is an English-Chinese translation report on the book Food Industry published in 2013,of which Chapter Ten and Chapter Twelve are selected as the source text for this translation project.Food Industry edited by Innocenzo Muzzalupo comprehensively introduces various aspects of food chain, such as food types, food quality, food safety, food production, products management of food industry, etc. It is a detailed reference guide for food producers and researchers in the food-related field. The selected Chapter Ten and Chapter Twelve mainly describe the food safety-related contents such as genetically modified food and the microbial contamination of homemade foods. In the process of this translation project, text typology theory is adopted as the guidance to solve the difficulties and problems occurring during the translation from English into Chinese. Some translation approaches, such as zero translation, free translation, conversion, division, addition, repetition, are applied to achieve the purpose of faithfully conveying the original information in the selected source text to the expressional habits of the target text in the target language. This translation report is divided into five parts. The first part gives an overview of translation tasks, including the background and significance of the translation tasks and the layout of the translation report. The second part describes the whole translation process, including pre-translation,in-translation and post-translation.The third part briefly introduces Reiss' s text typology theory, and analyzes the relevance of the theory. The fourth part gives case studies from the lexical, syntactic and textual level, focusing on how to use various translation methods to solve the problems in the translation process under the guidance of the text typology theory. The fifth part summarizes experience and limitations in the translation practice and puts forward suggestions for further improvements. The report holds that the original text is an informational text,so the translator should take into account the information function of the original text and the reading habits of the target language readers in the translation process to ensure the accuracy, completeness, fluency and logic of the translated text,so as to achieve the purpose of information exchange. The translator, through this translation project, has realized that translation theories are very crucial to guide the translation practice and that a wide range of professional knowledge has great impacts on the quality of translation. It is hoped that the report can provide valuable references for the study and translation of food safety.
