A Report On English-Chinese Translation Of Outbreak:Foodborne Illness And The Struggle For Food Safety(Excerpts)

Food and safety come as the first.Food is not only the main source of nutrients but also a guarantee for a healthy and strong body.Food safety issues are closely related to our life,economy as well as the whole society.The current situation of food safety is alarming as its problems have emerged one after another in recent years,which has seriously affected people’s daily life.The selected translation material for this report is from Outbreak: Foodborne Illness and the Struggle for Food Safety.The author chooses Chapter 7 and the first two sections of Chapter 8 to translate.Chapter 7 explains the tools of outbreak investigations: epidemiology,pathogen testing and product tracing.Chapter 8proposes some reforms to improve food safety in the US from the aspects of government,enterprises,regulatory agencies and so on.Guided by Skopos Theory,the author carries out translation practice in accordance with the Principles of Purpose,Coherence and Faithfulness.In the lexical analysis,the author put emphasis on the translation of terminology,acronym,general words and the noun structure.As for the sentence translation,the author adopts the methods of recombination of long sentences,supplement and omission of sentence components,readjustment of word order and voice conversion.The last part of this thesis is the summary,including the problems and deficiencies in the translation practice as well as experiences.The aim of this translation practice is to provide a reference for the scientific and technological translators and to disseminates the knowledge about foodborne illnesses.Meanwhile,this report also aims to provide beneficial references for the food safety management of China.
