As translation is a trans-language and trans-culture activity, translation loss is unavoidable due to differences in languages, cultures and thinking styles. The fact that translation loss may be caused at various levels, including linguistics, culture and aesthetic appreciation, calls for translators' awareness of translation loss and efforts to minimize it by taking relative compensation strategies. This paper aims to explore the application of translation compensation in translation practice. The content of the translation practice is extracted from Harry Porter Power,a psychological book with a unique literary taste. It's quite a challenge to reproduce its literary taste in terms of linguistics, culture and aesthetic appreciation. To solve the above-mentioned challenges, the author tries to adopt the six compensation strategies proposed by Xia Tingde, namely compensation by integration, compensation by isolation, compensation with the same device, compensation with a different device, compensation in a parallel location, and compensation in a displaced location. At the level of linguistics, the author adopts the strategy of compensation with a different device and the strategy of compensation in a parallel location to compensate loss in tense and semantic in-equivalence respectively. At the level of culture, the author adopts the strategy of compensation by integration, the strategy of compensation by isolation and the strategy of compensation in a parallel location to address challenges in the translation of culture-specific terms. At the level of aesthetic appreciation, the author adopts the strategy of compensation with a different device in the translation of language game;the strategy of compensation with a different device and the strategy of compensation in a parallel location in the translation of such rhetoric as repetition and metaphor;the strategy of compensation in a displaced location in the translation of language features;and the strategy of compensation with the same device and the strategy of compensation with a different device in the translation of rhyme and alliteration.
