A Study Of E-C Translation Practice Under The Guidance Of Translation Compensation Theory

In order to promote the cultural exchange between China and the Middle East,translators shoulder responsibility in the process of cross-cultural communication.Although there exist cultural differences between China and the Middle East,cultural communication and exchange can be achieved through continuous cultural dialogue.As a significant way for domestic people to understand the history of the Middle East,the translation of historical text is of great importance.Translation of historical text is different from that of other text types.The major aim of historical text is to tell historical facts,and the three evident characteristics of it are scientificity,accuracy and objectivity.This historical text,which introduces the historical roots of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,involves political,religious and national backgroundinformation.Besides,historical text is full of borrowed words,teminology and words with cultural connotations,all of which pose challengers to translators.Translators use translation compensation theory and specific compensation strategies during the process of translation to deliver the intact information of original text to the readers.This report,based on my translation of the fourth chapter of Hamas Jihad:Antisemitism,Islamic World Conquest and the Manipulation of Palestinian Nationalism into Chinese,is to discuss how the translation compensation theory is applied to enhance the quality of historical translation and to promote international cultural exchanges from linguistic,cultural and aesthetic levelsIt is found that compensation at three levels of language,culture and aesthetics can occur at the same time in the translation practice of historical and cultural texts.Among them,the rate of compensation at cultural and linguistic level is higher,while that at aesthetic level is lower.Due to the enormous differences between Chinese and English languages and the fact that Chinese people are generally unfamiliar with the history,religion and culture of the Middle East,it is necessary to use translation compensation theory.It is hoped that this analysis can reder a new perspective for doing historical translation studies as well as benefiting translation practice.
