Report On The Translation Of Ecolinguistics:Language,Ecology And The Stories We Live By (Excerpt)

For several decades,the degradation of the global environment has attracted unprecedented attention from people of all disciplines.Thus the study of environmental issues does not belong to any particular specialized discipline any more.Ecology and linguistics come together to tell a story of new field that has been named ‘ecolinguistics'.Therefore,translation of the foreign work Ecolinguistics may shed light on figuring out the relationship between language and ecology.This report is based on the translation practice of Ecolinguistics: Language,Ecology and the Stories We Live By which was published on 8th May 2015 by Routledge,a UK-based multinational publisher.The report will provide an explicit description about the task in five sections: introduction,task description,translation process,case analysis and conclusion.Given the differences in culture and language,serious consideration was given to the actual translation process.Under the guidance of Skopos Theory,the translation was done by following the principles of purpose,coherence and fidelity.Some translation strategies were applied to ensure the translation quality.It is intended that the Chinese translation of the second chapter of Ecolinguistics: Language,Ecology and the Stories We Live By will be useful for promoting research into ecolinguistics in the domestic context,by raising awareness of the ways in which ecolinguistics is conceived elsewhere in the world.Insights gained from this translation report include: a)Ecolinguistics has unique textual features,such as abstract language,profound concepts,and a host of case analysis;b)Translation of ecolinguistics requires the translator to possess a strong bilingual competence besides rich reserve of theoretical knowledge and logical thinking ability.
