As a newly developed independent discipline, ecolinguistics research in China started decades later than that overseas, which needs to learn from the relevant research results of foreign countries,so the translation of foreign excellent academic papers is particularly important. On this account, the translator selected an ecolinguistics paper published in 2014 Ecolinguistics: The State of the Art and Future Horizons by the renowned linguists Steffensen and Fill as the source of this translation practice. This paper is characterized by its high academic, professional, rigorous and accurate characteristics, which also brings difficulties to the translation practice.Translation difficulties are embodied in three aspects: first, many difficult terms are often used in terms of vocabulary;second,at the syntactic level, sentence structure is complex with many long difficult sentences and passive sentences;third,in terms of textual cohesion, there are multiple demonstrative pronouns and conjunctions.Aiming at these difficulties, the translator, based on functional equivalence theory, makes use of different translation techniques. In view of difficult terms, literal translation and annotation are adopted. For complex sentence structures, such as long and difficult sentences and passive sentences, the techniques of direct translation, word order reconstruction, component conversion and literal translation are adopted. For demonstrative pronouns and conjunctions on discourse cohesion, the techniques of addition and ellipsis are adopted. The translator argues that such a flexible translation method is more accurate in conveying information in the original language and achieving equivalence in communication functions, with the goal of clearly conveying rigorous and professional English academic papers to Chinese readers with culturally and academically different backgrounds, and serving as a bridge in academic communication.
