A Report On The E-C Translation Of Queen Of The Night(Chapters 12-21)

This is a report of an English-Chinese translation practice.The translator selects Chapters 12-21 of Queen of the Night,a young-adult fiction by Australian writer Leanne Hall,as the source text.The translated version contains more than 33,000 Chinese words.The source text chosen mainly focuses on the development of relationship between the hero Jethro and the heroin Nia,and narrates their exploration of the reasons for Paul's missing.In the translation report,the translator explains the difficulties encountered during the translating practice from the perspectives of lexicon and syntax,and then analyzes the methods adopted to deal with them by giving examples.For instance,the translator renders place names by transliteration,semantic translation and adding semantic explanations at the end.Besides,the translator adopts conversion to translate the derived nouns,uses amplification to complement the omitted parts and applies reinvention of the sentence structures to reframe complex sentences.The author creates an intricate story from the unique points of view of two main characters by plenty of psychological depictions,scene descriptions and charactersdialogues.This translation is expected to help the readers to understand the source text more deeply and provide further reference for other translators who are translating this kind of fiction.
