The Arrangements And Reflections Of Lin Yutang's Major Controversial Events

Lin yutang is not only a influential man in Chinese modern literary circles,but also a typical controversial figure.Looking back on his journey of eighty years,every stage of his life seemed to be full of controversy,those controversial events made him to be out of tune with the contemporaries,previous scholars' textual researches on Lin Yutang's controversial events mainly confined to the political and class position,or didn't conduct an overall investigation.In view of the complexity of the controversial events in Lin Yutang's life,this article chose several major controversial events and carry on a comprehensive research,the representative events are: sensational humorous literature in the 1930s;lived abroad during the Anti-Japanese war;Singapore's Nanyang University event in the 1950s;the tempest of “a nun desires normal human life” after settled in Taiwan in the 1960 s and so on.It is because of his controversial behaviors in each period,therefore,Lin Yutang “is perhaps the most difficult chapter in the history of the literature”.The above major controversial events had a great influence on Lin Yutang's reputation and image.In this paper,the “controversial” events as clues and narrative center.Structurally,the paper is divided into four parallel chapters,the structure of the first chapter is similar to the fourth,but the second and the third are different.In content,chapter one focuses on the controversy caused by Lin Yutang's humorous literature,which jumped off the shackles of the times,to investigate the objective meaning and value from the background of advocating humor and both sides of the arguement;chapter two combines the events of Lin Yutang lived abroad during the Anti-Japanese war and didn't return to the mainland to settle,classifies them as the controversy caused by “patriotism”,mainly from the aspects of his concerns about the state,cultural resistance and returning home helplessly to respond;chapter three tells about the event between Lin Yutang and Nanyang University,which caused a stir in Singapore,this chapter mainly describes the details of the event,which is conducive to clearly present the attitude and position of both sides,to make it easy for readers to judge;chapter four tells sbout the tempest of “a nun desires normal human life” caused by Lin Yutang in his late years,starts from the arguments,and then extends to the study under the position of Lin Yutang's “sensible” view,to show the significance and value of sensible philosophy.Focus on Lin Yutang's major controversial events,it has a great help to restore his true appearance and recognize the real Lin Yutang under the multiple controversies.For Lin Yutang's previous fair or unfair evaluations,the author also tries to reflect Lin Yutang's historical value and the position of academic research by combing the historical details.
