A Review Of The Hundred Year's Research On Lin Yutang

Lin yutang(1895-1976)is an important writer in the history of Chinese modern literature.The history of the new literature in the last hundred years has made him uncertain.This has brought certain difficulty to Lin Yutang's research.How to objectively treat and evaluate Lin Yutang has become a topic that can not be neglected in modern Chinese literature research.Therefore,it is particularly necessary to present the academic course of Lin Yutang's research through the collating and analysis of detailed historical documents.The main body of the paper is divided into four parts:The first part is the foundation of Lin Yutang's research,which began in the 1920 s and ended before the reform and opening-up in 1978.It can be divided into the beginning of1925-1949 and the 1950-1978 period of silence.In the previous period,it was mainly criticized by Lu Xun,Hu Feng,Guo Moruo and other critics.The period is divided into two stages by the transformation of Lin Yutang's thought and creation in the 1930 s.The early stage,Lin Yutang becomes well-known in the literary arena for his pioneer of “the dog-fighting movement” in “the Yusi School”,and he strongly advocated "humor","nature","essay" in the later stage.Subsequently,researchers also formed a different attitude of criticism,which is fully reflected in Hu Feng's article,"The comment of Lin Yutang",a representative of this period Lin Yutang's research.Therefore,Lin Yutang's research appeared in a boom period.As Lin Yutang went to the United States in 1936,Chinese mainland chose to "forget",even in the history of literature is only occasionally mentioned.In contrast,Lin Yutang's study of Hong Kong,Taiwan and abroad is lively,and achieved some substantive results.The second part is the recovery period of Lin Yutang's study,mainly in 1980 s.Scholars began with a rigorous attitude into this “forbidden zone” of Lin Yutang's study,changed the fixed negative image of Lin Yutang in the past,and sought his positive value.The researchers paid attention to dig Lin Yutang's material and explored his works and some relevant issues.Most of them study from the micro-level.During this period,there are several scholars who have made remarkable achievements in Lin Yutang's research: Wan Pingjin,Shi Jianwei,Liu Yansheng and so on.Wan Pingjin's "The comment of Lin Yutang" is the first Lin Yutang's research monograph.While Shi Jianwei focuses on Lin Yutang's humor.His "Lin Yutang" and "the Biography of Lin Yutang" are the articles to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of Lin Yutang.In addition,Chen Pingyuan's "Aesthetic and Eastern and Western culture of Lin Yutang",Tang Tao's "The comment of Lin Yutang" and so on are more weighty research work.The third part is the extension of Lin Yutang's research.From the beginning of 90's to the present,the researcher has studied Lin Yutang into the academic aspect.A lot of master's and doctoral dissertations are fruitful achievements of Lin Yutang's research,which shows that Lin Yutang's research has entered a new stage of development.Taking Wang Zhaosheng's doctoral dissertation “Lin Yutang's Cultural Feelings” as the representative,it entered the inner of Lin Yutang's thought study and tried to guide his readers into Lin Yutang's art world.In addition,Shi Ping's "Lin Yutang: the personality symbol of cultural transformation",Feng Zhiqiang's "Cross-cultural communication of Chinese wisdom",Dong Yan's "Aesthetic modernity tendency of Lin Yutang's cultural pursuit" and so on are important research results in this period.The research of this period has not only increased in quantity but also improved in quality;the research field has been expanded and deepened;the research method has diversified;the biography of Lin Yutang has come out in batches;and the establishment of specialized research institution is also a sign of Lin Yutang's research.The fourth part is the summary of Lin Yutang's research.Through the collation and analysis of Lin Yutang's academic history,the author finds out the value and insufficiency of Lin Yutang's research,clarifies the focus of research in the future,and promotes the development of Lin Yutang's study,so that people can look more objectively on Lin Yutang and his article,restore a more realistic Lin Yutang,sequentially tap its contemporary value and significance.
