Laws Of The Game:A Retranslation And Case Analysis

Rugby is emerging in China nowadays,but translation research on rugby is rarely found.The huge demand for rugby translation is to be meet.In China,most of rugby books are imported from abroad,few of which are in Chinese.There is only one Chinese guide on rugby law named Laws of the Game that is written and published by the World Rugby.However,the translator of the book makes mistakes on English understanding and Chinese expression,which could mislead rugby professionals and fans about rugby knowledge.It is also not beneficial for China to popularize and develop rugby.Based on Peter Newmark’s Text Classification Theory,the author puts forward Five Principles for translating informative function texts.Newmark,in terms of text function,divides texts into three categories,namely expressive function text,informative function text and vocative function text.According to his theory,Laws of the Game is an informative function text.Five Principles put forward by the author includes Accuracy Principle,Equivalence Principle,Neutrality Principle,Receiver Principle,and TL Principle.In this thesis,the author tries to apply Newmark’ Text Classification Theory and Five Principles to revise and retranslate Laws of the Game,therefore producina standarded,easy-understanding rugby law guide,and contributing to the popularization and development of rugby in China.
