A Report On E-C Translation Of Decarbonising Electricity Made Simple Based On Newmark’s Translation Theory

With the increasingly frequent technical exchanges between China and the world,scientific and technological translations have laid the foundation for the exchange of science and technology,and it is critical to advance China’s science and technology,particularly through learning the world’s cutting-edge technologies.The scientific and technological translations cover a wide range of areas,including translations of literature related to electricity.Electricity,as one of the pillars of the energy revolution,is essential to socio-economic growth.The source text for this translation report is taken from chapter 3,chapter 5,and chapter 8 of the English original edition Decarbonising Electricity Made Simple,using text functions,semantic translation and communicative translation put forward by British translation theorist Newmark to solve problems the translator has encountered in English-Chinese translation.This translation report begins by introducing the background and significance of the translation task,and then describes the process of translation,including the pre-translation,while-translation and post-translation.After that,an general overview of Newmark’s text functions,semantic translation and communicative translation is given.In the case study section,the translator applies Newmark’s translation theory to analyze specific examples from vocabulary,sentences,and paragraphs.Firstly,the translation methods of the technical terms,compound words and abbreviations and simple sentences are analyzed from the perspective of semantic translation.Secondly,under the guidance of the communicative translation,the translator discusses how to translate the common words with special meanings,passive sentences as well as long and complicated sentences in sci-tech texts.Finally,the translation method of informative paragraphs and vocative paragraphs is investigated according to Newmark’s classification of text functions and different contents of the sci-tech text.In translation practice,the translator reveals that the technical terms,compound words and abbreviations and simple sentences should be translated by semantic translation,with the meaning accurately expressed according to professional knowledge.When translating the common words with special meanings,passive sentences as well as long and complicated sentences,the translator adopts communicative translation to boost the readability of the target text while ensuring the accurate semantic meanings.For paragraphs with informative or vocative function,communicative translation is employed to translate them by splitting sentences or restructuring the target text so as to meet Chinese expression habits and give full play to the informative or vocative function.Through the above analysis,this report expects to offer some references for the translators working in the energy fields.
