Report On Chinese-English Translation Of Patent Abstracts Under Newmark's Text Type Theory

As one significant mark of innovation in science and technology,patents have drawn an increasing amount of attention.Patent abstracts,one of the necessary parts among relevant patent documents,are overviews of the invention or technology.Although some domestic scholars have done basic research on related translation skills or theories,the number of studies on the combination between translation theories and practice of patent is limited.This is a report that adopts the Newmark's text type theory to translate Chinese patent abstracts into English,and summarizes some relevant techniques based on the analysis of 19 examples.Original texts of patent abstracts provided in this report are chosen from the Project C that the author participated in.Patent abstracts are a kind of informative texts,whose core function is to deliver the same information from original texts to target readers.According to the Newmark's text type theory,Chinese-English translation of patent abstracts can be finished relatively well with the techniques summarized in this report.The experience of Chinese-English translation of patent abstracts demonstrated here can be used to provide reference and help to patent translators.
