A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of The Grey Nomads (Chapters 1-11)

This is an English-Chinese translation practice report.The original text comes from a travelogue called The Grey Nomads written by an English writer John Richardson.It describes a couple who come from England to travel America,Australia and Malaysia within eight months.Chapters one to eleven are translated and a translation report is written according to the translation.There are two purposes to write the translation report.First,it is an opportunity to improve translation ability through summarizing translation difficulties and translation methods.Second,this report can provide references for later translations of travelogue.The report analyzes translation difficulties from the perspectives of culture-loaded words of folk-custom,difficult compound adjectives,attributive clauses and logical sequence in long sentences.The report analyzes the reason of the difficulties and some translation methods are adopted to solve them.The translation method of culture-loaded words of folk-custom is to add footnotes to convey cultural connotation.Adopting Chinese four-character structure to translate difficult compound adjectives helps to improve translated text and the sense of beauty.Combination and division are selected according to the structure of attributive clauses and the habit of Chinese expression.In terms of logic sequence in long sentences,following the original syntactic order and reinventing the sentence structure are adopted.Conversion is main translation method to translate adverbial clauses guided by "before" according to the length of main clauses and subordinate clauses and their logic relation.Those translation methods help to accurately convey the original information and style to show the fascination and glamour of the original text.Finally,the translation report summarizes translation experience.After the translation,it is realized that a faithful,coherent and brilliant translation is closely related to what translation methods are adopted.In terms of The Grey Nomads,those translation methods contribute to produce faithful translations.Meanwhile,the translation conforms to Chinese logic sequence and the habit of Chinese expression.
