This report is focused on the compensation strategies and its effectiveness in this translation practice. With the first four chapters of Robert Allen's Nothing Down for the 2000s as practice materials, the report is focused on the loss of translation resulting from the differences between the English and Chinese language structure, the Chinese and Western culture,as well as Chinese and Western cognitive and thinking habits.Enlightened by Steiner's Four-Step Theory, this report determines the importance and necessity of translation compensation and discusses how to use corresponding compensation strategies to solve the problems of the untranslatability and the inevitable loss of translation caused by the above differences. With citing a number of the initial translation and final translation examples to compare and discuss at the same time, the report applies some specific compensation strategies such as disassembling compensation, substitution compensation,run-on compensation and viewpoint transfer compensation to improve the effectiveness of compensation strategies. This practice report is expected to provide a reference value for how to choose an effective compensation strategy in the English-Chinese translation practice to improve accuracy and quality of translating.
