News translation has played an increasingly important role in the age of information, giving the public an easy access to international events. But the textual features of news reports add to its difficulty in translation;differences in language, culture and ways of thinking of English and Chinese renders different ways of realizing conciseness, purposefulness and objectiveness.Correct strategies and appropriate methods inspired by Skopos Theory can improve and facilitate the translation.Skopos Theory argues that all translation is an action that has a purpose(skopos);the decisions made while translation by the translator should all refer to this underlying purpose.Three rules of Skopos Theory--skopos,coherence and fidelity--provide basic principles to select appropriate translation methods and strategies. The text of this translation project is an in-depth news report from the American magazine The New Yorker. The news report focuses on the corruption in outsourcing US military task during its operation in Afghanistan. In this thesis, the translator/writer adopts a case-study method and illustrates how the three rules of Skopos Theory help the translation of words, sentences and paragraphs from the news report respectively and achieved the expected fluency, vividness and eye-catching effect of news language. The translator mainly adopts adaption, addition, literal translation methods with footnotes and omission methods according to skopos principle;metonymy clarification, word order adjustment and division methods according to coherence principle;transliteration, free translation and literal translation methods according to fidelity principle.
