A Translation Report On Interesting(Excerpts)

This report takes parts of the first two chapters as the source text from the famous British snooker player Steve Davis’ autobiography. This part mainly describes the story in which how Steve Davis defeats the opponent to win the champion in the smoke-filled final of the World Championships, his father’ unique influence to him and he has an affinity with snooker. Under the guidance of semantic translation and communicative translation theory proposed by British linguist and translator Peter Newmark, this report aims to explore the issues that required attention when we fully achieve the desired effect during translating biography. In the process of translation,the author of the report combines the translation theory and concrete translation cases, meanwhile, applying other translation strategies and techniques to make the writing smoother.In the translation project of Interesting, one of the difficulties is the translation of idiomatic British phrases and snooker terms. So the author consults much available information as reading through the original text in order to avoid mistranslation. It also takes the author great efforts to deal with the difficult sentence segmentation to expect to restore the language style of the original text. Based on learnt translation theory and translation experience, this translation report conducts the case analysis and systematic explanation aiming at the translation research of biographical theory, to provide references for similar types of translation. The author also wishes to spread the autobiography of Steve Davis to China in order that the Chinese lovers of snooker can know his story better.As a result,their passions can be generated and promote the development of snooker in China through the Chinese translation of Interesting.There are three chapters in this report. The first chapter is the description of the translation task, including the introduction of the source, author and contents of the translation text and the significance of translating the text. The second chapter is the review of the translation process, in which the three parts containing preparation, translation process and proofreading are introduced. The preparation part expounds from three aspects,and in turn, they are reading and analysis of the original text, choosing translation theory and tools and planning of translation schedule. The translation process part specifically summarizes the problems encountered in the translation process. The proofreading part elaborates in what ways doing the post-translation work. The last chapter analyzes the applied theories and skills in some representative cases from the lexical and syntactic perspectives. Respectively, in the lexical level, this report makes the case analysis from three angles ranging from the translation of snooker terms, conversion to addition. In the syntactic level, this part analyzes the cases from parenthesis, subordinate clause and rhetorical devices separately.
