A Report On The Chinese-English Translation Of Biography Of Jiang Yiwu (Chapter 2-3) From The Perspective Of Variation Translation Theory

The translation materials used in this report are excerpted from Biography of Jiang Yiwu that describes the whole life of Jiang Yiwu,an outstanding democratic revolutionary in modern China.The book reflects China’s revolutionary history through the description of Jiang Yiwu’s life and deserves further researches.On the one hand,the author chooses Biography of Jiang Yiwu as the translation material out of respect for the celebrity in her hometown.Changde locals built Jiang Yiwu Memorial and Yiwu Middle School in memory of this figure,and Professor Zhou Xinglin of Hunan University of Arts and Science wrote the book after an in-depth investigation of Jiang Yiwu’s life.Jiang Yiwu’s stature or reputation in the hearts of Change locals can be evidenced by those efforts.On the other hand,the book provides a brand-new perspective for those keen on Chinese history,and readers may gain a comprehensive understanding of those historical events through a complete interpretation of a historical figure.Last but not least,translating this book may contribute to the Chinese culture export.This report selects parts of Chapter Two and Chapter Three of this book and,under the guidance of the variation translation theory proposed by Mr.Huang Zhonglian,analyzes and interprets the translation of Biography of Jiang Yiwu.The variation translation theory refers to the translation activity where the translator adopts flexible means to absorb the relevant content of the original text according to special requirements of specific readers under specific conditions.There are seven types of variation translation methods,namely amplification,omission,edition,narration,condensation,combination,and rewriting.And six of them are selected to analyze different translation versions after careful analysis of the features and contents of the text.Specifically speaking,amplification is applied to expressions with insufficient information,rewriting to expressions with Chinese characteristics,omission to expressions with repeated or useless information,condensation to expressions with redundant information,edition to expressions with disorderly information and combination to expressions with the same topic subject.
