A Report On C-E Translation Of Jia Pingwa:A Biography(Excerpts)

This is a report on C-E translation of Jia Pingwa: A Biography(Excerpts).Jia Pingwa: A Biography describes Jia Pingwa’s life experience for more than 60 years.This translation practice selects the second chapter of the biography,which tells the story of Jia Pingwa’s love and marriage with Junfang,his daughter’s birth,and the tortuous course of his literary creation.The language of the biography has distinctive regional features,such as culture-loaded words,proper nouns,Shaanxi dialect,and so on.At the same time,zero-subject sentences,sentences with consecutive verbs,run-on sentences are common in Chinese,which all become difficulties for translators to translate the biography.Andre Lefevere,a Belgian scholar,put forward Rewriting Theory in his book Translation,Rewriting and the Manipulation of Literary Reputation in the 1990 s.He believes that translation is the rewriting of the original text.This report analyzes the difficulties in translating the biography under the guidance of Rewriting Theory.In terms of culture-loaded words,literal translation,free translation,omission and annotation are adopted to reduce the obstacles of cultural exchange and achieve the goal of spreading Chinese culture.In terms of proper nouns,literal translation,free translation and addition translation are adopted to ensure the consistency and accuracy of proper nouns.In terms of Shaanxi dialect,the strategy of dialect standardization is adopted to accurately convey the meaning of dialects.In the terms of syntactic structure,the translator solves the translation problems of zero-subject sentences,sentences with consecutive verbs,run-on sentences,so as to conform to the poetics of western countries and improve the acceptability of English readers.Through this translation practice,the translator follows the Rewriting Theory to make the biography translation conform to the target language readers’ poetics and ideology as much as possible and also summarizes the difficulties in the process of translation and translation methods adopted,so as to gain experience for the translator to translate the biographical texts of Shaanxi writers and improve the translator’s translation skills.
