| This thesis is a translation report which is based on the translation practice of In the Space behind His Eyes: Donald R.Stuart 1913 to 1983: A Biography(Chapter II).The source text is a biographical work, and for historical authenticity, vivid description and certain communicative purposes, the author quotes extensively from primary sources. The adoption of quotations is a distinct characteristic of the source text. These quotations are from newspapers, interview transcripts, documentary books and literary works, with diversified contents, various styles and deep social, historical and cultural connotations.Due to the linguistic and cultural differences and the dual restrictions of quoted context and source context, enormous difficulties have arisen in the translation process. In order to solve these difficulties, the translator takes Eco-translatology as theoretical guidance and implements three-dimensional transformations, namely the adaptive transformations on linguistic, cultural and communicative dimensions. On the linguistic dimension, the parts of speech and the passive structures are converted to deal with the language differences;on the cultural dimension,four-character idioms and paraphrase are adopted to resolve the cultural discrepancies;on the communicative dimension, for achieving the communicative purposes, diction in context is employed to transmit the communicative intentions and amplification is adopted to improve the communicative effects. In this report, the translator elaborates on the translation difficulties as well as summarizes the experience and limitations of this translation project, expecting to provide references for the future translation of similar types. |
