As one of the most effective ways to keep pace with the latest economy, the Chinese version of English economic news provides more opportunities for Chinese readers to engage the global economy. Therefore the accuracy and readability of the translation must be ensured, which is of great importance to the target readers. However, some Chinese versions are hard to understand and even misguiding readers because of sloppy expressions and mistranslations.Based on the pragmatic features of English economic news and the case analyses of economic news in The New York Times and its Chinese version, this thesis is in the light of pragmatic equivalence with a view to bring out some useful E-C translation principles and techniques for translators. It is found that English economic news has its own pragmatic features in terms of lexis, syntax and rhetoric; that with the guidance of pragmatic equivalence translators can produce accurate and idiomatic Chinese version by achieving equivalence both in pragmalinguistics and sociopragmatics; that E-C translation principles like maximizing news value and E-C translation techniques like pragmatic enrichment can be adopted in order to produce precise and idiomatic translation. Meanwhile it is hoped that the present study will prove to be of both theoretical significance and practical value to translation studies. |
